Director of Nursing Full Time

Summary:

The Director of Nursing is responsible and accountable for managing the Nursing Department and ensuring that superior quality of nursing services are provided to patients in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner.

Managerial Responsibilities:

1. Contribute to the achievement of the strategic objectives of the sector through performing own responsibilities and managing direct reports performance.
2. Set the department’s goals and objectives and ensure the cascading of such to reporting sections, and guide their achievement.
3. Contribute to the development of the sector’s policies, procedures and processes through providing input as advised by the direct supervisor.
4. Provide direction and advice to the direct reports in performing their delegated responsibilities.
5. Ensure the ongoing development of the department’s employees, and assure the developmental activities of direct reports.
6. Oversee the overall performance of direct reports and ensure KPI’s are well communicated and monitored.
7. Ensure effective identification, allocation and utilization of the division’s resources.

Functional Responsibilities:

1. The Nursing Director is considered a member of the hospital leadership. His/her role is essential in achieving high quality patient care.
2. The Nursing Director is responsible and accountable for the standard of nursing care in the hospital along with the Medical Director and Quality Director. All should work as one team to monitor and observe the standards of clinical care provided to patients all over the hospital.
3. The Nursing Director and other nurse Managers together with the nursing staff and nursing aides are the cornerstone for the provision of a high quality and safe care.
4. The nursing director is responsible for the direction, provision, and quality of nursing services provided to patients.
5. The nursing director develops the nursing organizational chart as well as the nursing education and quality improvement.
6. Ensures through his actions, either directly or indirectly, that a superior quality of medical treatment, compassion and understanding is given to every patient served at the CARE Hospitals and Clinics.
7. Develop and communicate the vision and mission statement of the Nursing Department.
8. The nursing director represents the nursing staff as one of the hospital leaders.
9. The nursing director participates with the other hospital leaders in the decision making processes, including planning and budgeting.
10. Recommend space, medical technology, staffing and other resources needed by the department or services and have a process in place to respond shortages.
11. The nursing director participates in the hospital’s multi-disciplinary structures (e.g., committees such as quality improvement, infection control and pharmacy and therapeutics).
12. Conduct short and long range strategic planning in accordance with Hospital objectives.
13. The nursing director oversees and assures that committees’ recommendations are implemented at the nursing level.
14. Provide guidance and leadership to all nursing staff to ensure effective and efficient flow of work, and ensure all employees recognize their fundamental role in the department.
15. The nursing director assumes the authority, responsibility, and accountability for assuring proper and effective nursing services.
16. The nursing director establishes, oversees, and approves nursing policies and procedures and nursing professional standards of practice and patient care.
17. The nursing director ensures participation with other hospital leaders in the development of practices that promote patients and staff safety (e.g., infection control, safe medication management, safe use of medical equipment, and fire safety).
18. The nursing director together with other relevant staff work to develop essential policies and procedures within Nursing scope.
19. Patient transfer (internal and external) and Patient discharge.
20. The nursing director implements an effective method for organizing the delivery of patient care (e.g. functional, team, primary care).
21. The nursing director ensures the implementation of a policy and procedure that defines patient care delivery method(s). This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
22. Nursing policies and procedures manual.
23. Current nursing practice manuals/books.
24. The nursing director ensures the competency of the nursing staff.
25. The nursing director participates in the recruitment and hiring of qualified nurses as outlined in the leadership chapter.
26. The nursing director monitors the performance of the nursing staff and assures their ongoing competency.
27. The nursing director develops a staffing plan that maintains an adequate staffing level in all nursing units. The staffing plan identifies an evidence-based estimation of the number of staff needed per shift, considering all relevant factors (e.g., patient acuity, patient care hours, size of the hospital, scope of services provided).
28. The nursing director ensures the availability of adequate number of licensed registered nurses to provide nursing care for all patients.
29. Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.

Job Specifications

Minimum Job Qualifications Requirement (Academic, Certifications, languages, etc.)

A minimum of:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
• Master degree in Nursing along with Diploma / certification in administration is preferred.

License and Certification:

• Valid license from Saudi Commission for Health Specialist.
• BLS is Mandatory
• Desirable: ACLS, PALS, NRP, relevant certifications

Minimum Work Experience:

Required

• 10 years of related experience in a large scale health care organization in nursing to include a minimum of five (5) years as a Director of Nursing or Assistant Director of Nursing.
• Middle East experience is preferred.
• Experience working with multicultural nursing staff.
• Desirable: Previous administrative experience.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate hospital-wide nursing initiatives.
• Strong interpersonal skills such as leadership, communication, persuasion, motivation, and loyalty.
• Ability to select, develop, manage and motivate Nursing personnel.
• Must be a professional of unquestionable integrity, credibility, and character.
• Proficiency in English.
• Communication in spoken Arabic is desirable.
