Postdoc Research Fellow — Architectural Robotics & Interactive Environments
Alfaisal University | DaVinciAT Robotics in Architecture Research Center
“Architecture no longer stands—it performs.” This position is not about buildings as objects, but as agents.
Position Overview
The DaVinciAT Robotics in Architecture Research Center invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Architectural Robotics and Interactive Environments under the direction of Dr. Tarek H. Mokhtar. The role engages with the emerging ontology of space as a cyber-physical system—where walls sense, ceilings respond, and environments act as non-humanoid social entities. The research trajectory interrogates how architecture can think, move, and co-evolve with its users.
Core Responsibilities
* Lead advanced research in architectural robotics, interactive architecture, and cyber-physical spatial systems.
* Design and prototype non-humanoid robotic environments embedded within architectural elements (envelopes, interiors, adaptive systems).
* Develop experimental frameworks for human–environment interaction (HART, CPS, ubiquitous computing).
* Produce high-impact publications (Q1 journals) and contribute to international discourse.
* Collaborate across disciplines—engineering, design, AI—to construct integrated spatial intelligence systems.
* Supervise research assistants and contribute to competitive grant development.
Required Expertise
* Demonstrated research depth in architectural robotics, interactive architecture, cyber-physical systems, or closely aligned domains.
* Strong grounding in computational design, robotics, AI/ML integration, or human-centered interaction within built environments.
* Evidence of scholarly output in reputable journals or conferences.
* Ability to operate critically across design, engineering, and theory.
Qualifications
* Ph.D. in Architectural Robotics, Architecture, Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Position Framing
This is not a conventional postdoc. It is a position within a laboratory that treats architecture as a living system:
not form-making, but behavior-making;
not space as container, but space as participant.
Candidates should be prepared to challenge disciplinary boundaries and construct new ones.
