ABOUT THE ROLE

Firefly is hiring a QA Automation Engineer to join the R&D team. This is not a traditional QA role. The engineer will work across UI, API, infrastructure, and cloud environments, treating the automation framework as a product in itself.

This role is best suited for someone who thinks like a software engineer: someone who can write clean automation code, debug issues across the stack, provision test environments with infrastructure-as-code, and improve CI pipelines and framework reliability as the platform scales.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design, build, and maintain automated test suites across:
• UI
• API
• infrastructure / cloud layers
• Own and improve test execution pipelines, reporting, and framework reliability
• Provision and manage cloud-based test environments using IaC
• Investigate and debug issues across:
• Frontend
• Backend
• Database
• Cloud resources / provisioning
• Collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to align testing with feature requirements
• Improve automation coverage, reduce flakiness, and keep the framework scalable and maintainable
• Contribute to testing around performance, scalability, reliability, and availability in cloud-based systems
• Support monitoring, alerting, and reporting for automated processes

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

In Order Of Importance

Good software methodologies / Clean Code

• Strong engineering mindset
• Writes maintainable, structured, readable automation code
• Understands abstraction, reuse, and long-term framework health

Pytest best practices

• Strong hands-on experience with pytest
• Comfortable with:
• fixtures
• markers
• parametrization
• parallel execution
• organizing scalable test suites

Infrastructure as Code

• Experience with Terraform or OpenTofu
• Able to provision and manage test environments as code
• Familiarity with Helm Charts is a plus

Configuration and secret management

• Understands how to manage test configuration safely and cleanly
• Comfortable with secrets handling across cloud / CI environments

CI tools

• Strong experience with CI systems, preferably GitHub Actions
• Able to design, maintain, and improve automation pipelines

At least one cloud platform

• Solid working knowledge of AWS, GCP, or Azure
• AWS or GCP preferred
• Understands cloud architecture and testing needs in SaaS environments

OpenAPI experience

• Comfortable testing REST APIs and working from API specifications
• Experience with OpenAPI / Swagger is important

Additional Must-Have Skills

• 3+ years of professional Python experience within automation frameworks
• Experience building and scaling automation frameworks
• Strong understanding of cloud-based testing needs in SaaS products
• Comfortable with Docker, Git, and modern development workflows
• Solid understanding of system design and cloud architecture
• Able to quickly learn unfamiliar tools and technologies

Nice to Have

• Experience with NoSQL databases such as:
• MongoDB
• Elasticsearch
• Familiarity with:
• OAuth
• JWT
• SSO
• Exposure to:
• multi-cloud testing
• multi-region testing
• Kubernetes-based environments
• Previous experience in a SaaS company
• Familiarity with performance / scalability testing
